美式橄榄球强调“攻击性”，每次本队开球以后，队员都要想尽办法把球向前推进，如果哪方4次倒地后仍无法把球推进，就必须乖乖地把球交给对方，转由对方队进攻。但在英式橄榄球比赛中，球必须往身后的队员那里传，球员倒地后必须立刻将球“脱手”，任由其它队员抢夺，所以特别容易出现“叠罗汉”的场面。

计分方式

英式橄榄球的得分方式有两种———达阵得分、射门得分。持球触到球门线，称为达阵，得5分。达阵后，得分队还可以在达阵点与球门线垂直的假想线上定踢射门一次，射中得2分。因一方犯规而获得的罚踢射门以及在比赛中进行落踢射门，射中得3分。

而美式橄榄球得分的形式分3种———达阵得分、射门得分和安全得分。持球触地达阵得6分；达阵后定踢射门，射中得1分；比赛进行中射中得3分；在对方得分区内，把对方逼成死球，算作安全得分，得2分。
